Rhiya Ahir, 27, went viral after a July 22 protest at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. She stood in front of a police van carrying detained protesters during student protests linked to alleged NEET exam issues.
Ahir is a Mumbai model, actor, and entrepreneur. Her work includes modelling, Hindi theatre, anchoring, advertisements, dance projects and music videos. She also runs Rhiyasat, a clothing venture that works with Indian artisans.
Rhiya Ahir’s education
Ahir studied Psychology at Mumbai’s Sathaye College. In an interview with Rediff, she said she finished her studies before 2019 and changed her work and study plans.
She later joined the University of Mumbai to study English Literature by correspondence. Ahir told Rediff that she paid her fees. But she said she had trouble getting a reply from university officials.
Her own study problems helped her relate to the students’ concerns. She said the issue was not only about one exam.
Theatre and acting career
Ahir has said she has about 13 years of theatre experience. She credits theatre for teaching her to speak with confidence and stay calm before a crowd.
She later worked in modelling, acting and anchoring. She also appeared in advertisements, dance projects and music videos. Her recent screen work includes the music video Dilbara, released in 2025.
Ahir said her theatre work helped her stay calm during the Shivaji Park incident. Her stage skills became useful during the sudden public confrontation.
Modelling career and social media
Modelling remains a key part of Ahir’s work. She has worked in fashion and entertainment and has built a social media following of nearly one lakh, according to Hindustan Times.
Her work also includes acting, hosting, music videos and public events. The protest brought her to the notice of many people outside the film and fashion world.
Rhiyasat fashion venture
Ahir is also an entrepreneur. She founded Rhiyasat, a clothing venture that uses handmade work and works with Indian artisans.
The venture was linked to the debate over Prada’s use of a design tied to the traditional Kolhapuri chappal. Ahir chose to build a business around Indian craft work.
The venture gave her career another side. She moved from wearing fashion as a model to building a business linked to Indian craft.

She has also spoken about thinking of a career in the armed forces. She later chose modelling and entertainment.
What happened at Shivaji Park?
The incident took place on July 22, 2026, at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. It came during protests linked to student anger over alleged NEET exam issues and police action against protesters.
Ahir had been following the student movement. She visited Shivaji Park the day before the incident.
On July 22, she returned while walking from Kohinoor Square in Dadar towards Shivaji Park. She saw a police van carrying detained protesters.
According to her media accounts, the number of people inside the van upset her. She then decided to step in.
Ahir stood in front of the van and refused to move. A video showed her with her arms outstretched in the rain. The video soon spread across social media.
Hindustan Times reported that she stayed there until, according to her account, the detainees were released. India Today also reported that she had never joined a protest before this event.
Why Rhiya Ahir went viral
The scene drew attention because it was simple and sudden. Ahir was not on a stage or at a planned event. She was standing in front of a police vehicle in the rain.
Ahir has rejected claims that the act was staged for publicity. She said it was a sudden decision after she saw protesters being held.
The event also brought her earlier career into focus. Many people learned about her modelling and acting work only after the video spread.
Online abuse after the protest
The new attention also led to online abuse. Ahir alleged that she received abusive messages, threats and morphed images after the incident.
According to Mid-Day, she went to the cyber cell and filed a police complaint over the alleged online abuse. The complaint added another issue to the public attention around the protest.
Rhiya Ahir before the viral moment
Before July 2026, Ahir had built a career in several creative fields. Her work included theatre, modelling, acting, anchoring, music videos and a fashion venture.
The Shivaji Park incident brought her story to a much wider audience. She is now being discussed in relation to education, student protests, civic action and online abuse.
